Robotic surgery, which should be eaten

When we hear "robot surgeon," we are likely to imagine the huge machine, "armed" scalpels. But very soon the meaning of this phrase may change radically. The fact that, according to an article published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, a team of researchers has created a small robot that can operate on patients from the inside without a single incision in the skin.

Robotic surgery, which should be eaten

A miniature robot surgeon called Smart Tissue (STAR). For his creation are experts from Johns Hopkins University. The skills possessed by the STAR, can cause the envy of even the most experienced surgeons.

In a series of laboratory tests small surgeon conducted a series of operations on live pigs. During pilot operation robot was programmed to create an intestinal anastomosis (Compound ulcer sites that are often required in removing tumors, necrosis and other states). So, stitching the two sections of the small intestine pig was successful, and the robot cope with the task. In this case, the external injuries were not applied to the animal as a robot is introduced through the mouth. It is worth mentioning that the person is still involved in the operation: he maintained a thread for suturing. But considering that this is only the first model of the robot, can be avoided in the future human involvement in operations. Active development of robotic medical equipment due to the fact that, according to the researchers, to conduct complex operations do not always have enough qualified specialists. For example, according to estimates of Australian scientists, in 2030 the need for personnel of the medical sphere will reach 40 million, while the actual number is more than 2 times less - 18 million people.
