Breakthrough Listen Project published the first results of search for extraterrestrial life
Scientists project Breakthrough Listen, in the search for extraterrestrial life, published the results of the first three years of their observations. Recall that the purpose of the project with a budget of $ 100 million, launched in 2015 by the investor Yuri Milner and the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is to scan 1 million of our nearest star, as well as 100 nearby galaxies near the Milky Way.
According to Space.com portal, scientists project to date details scanned in 1327 nearby stars (representing 80 per cent of the total) for the presence of extraterrestrial technology signals. In a statement, the scientists reported that it collected nearly 1 petabyte (one million gigabytes) of digital data, which is now freely available to the public.
Aliens have not yet found
"The publication of this data set - a huge milestone for the team Breakthrough Listen. We have cleared thousands of hours of observations of nearby stars in the billions of different frequencies. We found no trace of artificial signals, but it does not mean that there is no intelligent life: we can not look in the right place or peer deep enough to catch the desired signal ", - said the lead author, University of Technology employee Swinburne and California Berkeley Danny Price.
Research group Breakthrough Listen University of California, the Research Center for SETI (BSRC) at Berkeley has developed a number of methods for data search "tehnosignaturam" - testimony of technologies, with which can be, for example, transmitters or power plants, build a civilization beyond Earth. These techniques include searching for powerful signals that occupy a narrow frequency band, the search for the brightest lasers used for communication or movement, as well as the use of new algorithms based on machine learning methods. Their scientists use for the study of unexplained astrophysical phenomena in addition to finding tehnosignatur.
To search for extraterrestrials, scientists use radio telescope in Green Bank, located in West Virginia (USA), as well as a radio telescope "Parks" in Australia. Soon it is planned to connect to the project and other observatories.
The results of studies of the first three years of the project are laid out in the open access online Breakthrough Listen and BSRC site. The total size of database PB 1 also contains results of the observations for the first radio bursts repeated rapid FRB 121102 and asteroid Oumuamua.
"Although we have previously reported smaller-scale results of their work, we are pleased to announce that we are ready to provide publicly available the first full and very large data collection, as well as the instructions by which anyone can help us find extraterrestrial civilizations. And this is only the beginning, ahead there is still a lot of work ", - added the chief system administrator SETI Research Center to search for extraterrestrial civilizations Matt Lebofski.
