At the bottom of the lake found the remains of the oldest flower that survived the dinosaurs
Every year, thousands of scientists have excavated remains of ancient plants and animals, but do not have time to study them and sent to storage in the next museum. However, these findings are, sooner or later will still fall into the hands of researchers, who make amazing discoveries. flower, which originally grows in the tropics, and in the time of Peter I came to Russia - so in one of the museums in Germany, the fossilized remains of the oldest lilies were found. The find surprised scientists because it found the flower is well preserved despite the fact that survived the fall of the meteorite had destroyed the dinosaurs.
The remains of the ancient lilies have been found on the bottom of the former Lake Crato, located in the northeast of Brazil. It grows there for about 115 million years ago, and its length was about 40 centimeters. Until now, scientists had known for more than 110 species of lilies, but found the plant was attributed to an entirely new type, whose name was given Cratolirion bognerianum.
the oldest plants on the bottom of the lake
To the scientists' surprise, the plant is very well preserved. In the photos you can well distinguish the flower itself, narrow leaves and roots. Plant froze down to the cellular level, so the researchers were able to even see the tiny veins - the tube through which the plant receives water and nutrients from the soil.
In order to better see the structure of the flower, the scientists used computer tomography. After spending the plant through a special device, the researchers examined layer by layer all the innards of ancient finds. Tomographic picture can be viewed below: leaves of the plant are marked in dark green, pistils highlighted in light green and the petals - orange.
where the first flowers?
Earlier, on the site of an ancient lake in Brazil were found and other plants like water lilies, and the progenitor of the modern pepper. On this basis it is considered that this area was once grew a myriad variety of plants. Scientists has been suggested that all flowering plants originally appeared in the hottest places on the planet, the tropics, and then spread throughout the world.
Ancient lily - is not the only discovery that a few years lying at the museum and did not attract the attention of scientists. Remains of ancient hyenas, for example, lay in a museum more than 50 years. And in vain - it turned out that this ancient predator lived in the territory of the cold Arctic, and was very different from modern counterparts.
