Tesla introduced a very powerful, modular battery for storing solar energy
As the production of the scope of the so-called "green energy" (solar and wind), the market is starting to need new solutions, allowing you to store this energy in large volumes. About two years ago, we wrote about how the company Tesla actually on the dispute within 100 days built in Australia, the world's largest lithium-ion battery capacity of 100 megawatts of energy storage on the basis of Tesla Powerpack. But this company has decided not to stop. Today, Tesla is a new system for "large-scale" energy storage. The project is called Megapack.
His way in the field of development of energy storage systems company Tesla begins with the creation and production Powerwall household batteries, allowing you to store energy derived from solar cells mounted on the roofs of houses. For business-oriented solutions Powerpack system was introduced later. According to the latest announcement, the company decided to seriously focus on the industrial scale energy storage systems.
Tesla reports that Megapack is a system of modular panels, the size of which does not exceed the size of a shipping container. The batteries can be connected directly to the solar panels. The capacity of each battery is Megapack 3 MWh. This is about 14 times more than the capacity Powerpack storage, which can store about 210 kW / h of energy.

The company indicates that the battery Megapack is a complete solution, equipped with all additional equipment necessary not only for storage, but also to redistribute the issued electricity.
Why do we need such a system?
According to the company, the main advantage of Megapack batteries is that they can be combined into a large energy storage on the basis of environmentally friendly sources of power of 250 MWh or 1 GWh. Thus Tesla notes, mounting and installation of such a system takes a minimum of three months, which is four times faster than build and run the power plant of similar capacity on fossil fuels (eg, coal). In addition, Tesla noted that the station is based on the Megapack batteries will take up 40 percent less space than similar offers power.
All elements within the overall storage Megapack Powerhub interact with the central control system that helps to monitor and control all facilities.
The company estimates that the reserve of energy in the amount of 1 GWh is enough to provide electricity to all houses in San Francisco for six hours. Megapack is not a complete replacement of the usual power plants, but the system can be used as a temporary backup power source during peak loads and outages grids. Usually in such cases, use special stations. They are very expensive to build, and each day of such a plant can cost millions of dollars, indicates the Tesla website.
