The first race was held with the participation of unmanned racing cars. But before Formula 1 it is far
Auto racing is one of the most spectacular sports. There are many subspecies of the same races like rally racing or NASCAR events, but if you like to look at the high-speed car competitions, then it is possible that you will be a surprise. Because in addition to the usual cars, manned from within, it is not far off full-scale race involving unmanned vehicles. And the first such check within Roborace competition has already taken place in the Spanish Monteblanco track.
Roborace - this subclass is gaining popularity in recent Formula E. The competition within Formula E are allowed to use only electric cars. Roborace but goes further and in addition to the condition that the car should work on the motor, raises the requirement that the car was autonomous. The purpose of the new competition - to demonstrate the possibilities of artificial intelligence and robotics in sport and the development of high technologies. The idea of creating a new championship came back in 2015 and since then the organizers presented a set of unmanned prototype race cars.
What machines are involved in Roborace
At this point in the race race cars participate DevBot 2.0. They are capable of acceleration to 320 km per hour, and have a very good capacity motor 300 kilowatts. For navigation and orientation on the track, each has five DevBot 2.0 lidar, radar two, eighteen ultrasonic sensors GNSS satellite navigation system, six cameras, two optical speed sensor and processor Nvidia Drive PX2.
This is interesting: Who is faster: an unmanned car or a professional rider?
That is, each car has exactly the same characteristics and any further details. But what's the point? The uniqueness of each machine is not the installed modules, and properly configured algorithms behavior of cars on the road. Each racing team develops its own algorithms, sets the settings and "teaches" the car to behave on the road. The one who will succeed best will win. In fact the team is working on the same lines as in the preparation for the race with a real person, she only trains artificial intelligence.
How was the first race with the participation of unmanned cars
Spanish Monteblanco track came together two teams - the team from the Technical University of Munich and the Team Arrival. Race included 8 laps on the racing track. And overtaking and maneuvering were imposed some restrictions in order to reduce the risk of accidents and to test the operation of AI algorithms.
drones DevBot 2.0 to overtake as follows: if the car is close to going ahead in one part of the road in front of the straight road (in the picture above it is labeled as a Trigger Zone), it asks for the possibility of overtaking. Another car after experiencing a Trigger Zone should step aside and pass the car on the road section, is intended for overtaking (designated as Overtaking Zone). As a result, I won DevBot 2.0 from Team Arrival, but this is only the first and in many ways a test check. Since any excesses on the track did not happen in the future be able to participate in races and other teams and machines, it is possible to behave more aggressively, which, no doubt, will add entertainment. After all, what has been is difficult to call a race. In fact, we imee accurate driving on a more or less high speeds without any heating starstey and spirit of competition. But that is what we love racing.
