Photo of the Day 2.06.2012
This galaxy NGC 891, the size of which is about 100 thousand light-years from our point of view it is seen almost exactly edge-on. NGC 891 in the constellation Andromeda, is from us at a distance of 30 million light-years away and is very similar to our own Milky Way. Immediately attracted the attention of her flat, thin disk and a central bulge that crosses a dark band of obscuring dust. Also visible are young, blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions.
