• Chernivtsi University

As you know, the most vivid and memorable impressions remain from unplanned trips. I was convinced once again missed the train on a bright day, hovering on the Austro-Hungarian territory. Now it is, of course, already Chernivtsi. But a lot of monuments of that era encouraged locals and visitors to this day. In this photo essay, I want to talk about the main attractions of Chernivtsi - Chernivtsi National University.

In 1860, the famous Czech architect and scientist Joseph Glaucus created the project of the future residence of the metropolitans, and in 1864 began its construction. The construction lasted 18 years and ended in 1882. For this special two brick and one tile factories were built. And to build such a grand structure known craftsmen and builders from Prague and Vienna were allowed to put no more than a hundred bricks a day, and each brick is measured separately.

Chernivtsi National University. Fedkovych - a real architectural attraction - we can say, the heart of Chernivtsi. It was founded by decree of Emperor Franz Josef (Austria-Hungary), October 4, 1875. Then there were only three faculties: theological, philosophical and legal.

The history of the University is very interesting, at different times and the era he belonged to different states. For example, in 1918, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated, and Northern Bukovina joined Romania, Chernivtsi University, became a Romanian university. In 1940, Bukovina joined Ukraine and the University was reorganized into the Soviet state school, but teaching in the Ukrainian language.

Unfortunately, during World War II after the great fire of this religious building was severely looted and destroyed, and a capital restoration was carried out only in 1956, after which there is located a modern and Chernivtsi National University.

In 1989, the university was named after the famous Ukrainian writer Fedkovych.

At the moment, UNESCO addresses the issue of the introduction of the Chernivtsi National University in the list of architectural monuments of Ukraine. If a positive decision is made, it will be the third architectural monument, which is under UNESCO protection in this country. Now Ukraine 2 monuments - this is the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and the old part of the city.

In due time Joseph Glaucus thought out construction of the residence for centuries. He built not only amazing in its beauty the construction, but also fully thought through a unique drainage system under a layer of gravel. It has been included in the project planting acacia trees, which not only decorate the yard, and even with the help of their roots suck water, which is suitable to the foundations of the walls. A pipe that should divert the water from the roof, do not lower it to the ground as in conventional houses, and take away her away from the building on special underground channel, thereby preventing the building to collapse completely.

The majestic arches and columns in the transitions between floors.

The interior of the audience remained still since the days when these halls were engaged seminarians.

Walking through the corridors of the university, you feel the spirit of the monastery.

I could not get into the garden, but I learned that outside the university is a unique botanical garden, which was created in parallel with the main residence of more in 1864. Interesting fact - for some of the rare species of trees that still exist, at the time Bukovina paid tribute to Turkey.

Within the University, the residence is the Marble Hall, which is decorated with various species of red and pink and brown tones of marble and is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Europe.

University Roofs are covered with glazed tiles of eight colors and are decorated with original ornaments.

On the campus to this day is a valid Christian Church, and the theological faculty, which was the only theological faculty in the education system of the Soviet Ukraine.

The richness and decoration of buildings and interiors just amazes and delights. They combine eastern and intertwine, Byzantine and Gothic motifs.
