City of the Dead in North Ossetia-Alania
• City of the Dead in North Ossetia-Alania
Dargavs - a village in the Prigorodny district of North Ossetia-Alania, which is primarily known for its necropolis of numerous crypts. The complex has more than 90 necropolis crypts of different sizes representing the right parallelepiped construction tapering towards the top with stepped roofs in the form of pyramids with small window apertures. The richer and nobler was the family, the greater was the crypt, while poorer families tombs were small, with gabled roofs ... Some of the tombs were built of stone with a solution, and some - from solid stone blocks.
The plague that raged in the mountain gorges at the turn of the XVIII and XIX centuries has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, whole families died out. As a result, the population of Ossetia has decreased from 200,000 at the end of the XVIII century to 16,000 by the middle of the XIX century. Ossetians as a nation on the brink of extinction. In order not to infect their neighbors, the sick the whole families, with children in their arms went into the pre-built crypts, where and died. Those who remained healthy, leaving the gorge.
Dargavs was one of the key points in our North Ossetian section of the route, because it can be said is the hallmark attractions of the mountain gorges. It was already evening and we were in a hurry to catch up to the sunset. As a result, we were lucky with the light, the sun occasionally peeked from behind the clouds and shone down upon the light areas and the slopes themselves "houses".
They do seem very much! And there are no people around.
its shape vaults for some reason I attributed towards the South-East Asia, or similarity with Balinese temples, or even with something.
Inside completely dark, light enters only through a small window ... bones, remains, and wooden coffins in the form of boats ... to believe that after the death of the deceased must cross the river to get to the other world.
In some skeletons still have remnants of clothing ...
View of the valley from the top of the necropolis.
Mold gives a natural charm to these facilities.
My expectations from the visit Dargavs fully justified. Location sure to visit in North Ossetia.
